Mastering for streaming is a nuanced process that requires attention to the specific loudness standards and normalization practices of each platform. Here's an overview of the current loudness targets for major streaming services:

  • Spotify: Targets -14 LUFS integrated with a True Peak ceiling of -1 dBTP. Tracks louder than this are turned down, and quieter tracks are boosted, potentially affecting dynamic range Spotify.

  • Apple Music: Aims for -16 LUFS integrated, with similar True Peak limitations. The Sound Check feature normalizes playback volume across tracks

  • YouTube: Normalizes to -14 LUFS integrated, but only reduces volume; quieter tracks remain so unless adjusted during mastering

  • Tidal and Amazon Music: Both target around -14 LUFS integrated, with -1 dBTP ceilings

These platforms utilize loudness normalization to ensure consistent listening experiences across diverse content. As a result, mastering engineers must consider these standards to maintain the artistic integrity of the track while ensuring it translates well across various services.

The process involves more than just adjusting levels; it requires a tailored approach that accounts for each platform's specific requirements. This includes:

  • Accurate LUFS and True Peak Measurement: Utilizing industry-standard metering tools to ensure compliance with platform standards.

  • Dynamic Range Preservation: Applying appropriate compression and limiting to maintain the track's energy and emotional impact without introducing distortion.

  • Format Considerations: Understanding the differences between lossy and lossless formats and their impact on audio quality.

By adhering to these practices, we ensure that your music not only meets technical specifications but also retains its intended sound quality across all streaming platforms. Email us to discuss getting started.
